Roaming Tasmania

Day

1

Arrival in Hobart

Arrive in Hobart and settle into your centrally located accommodation at Hotel Grand Chancellor. The first day is deliberately relaxed, giving you time to unwind and become acquainted with Tasmania’s historic capital before the journey begins in earnest. In the evening, meet your guides and fellow travellers over welcome drinks, followed by a two-course dinner — an easy introduction to the people and flavours that will accompany your exploration of Tasmania’s south, east and north.

Day

2

Journey to Bruny Island

Travel south to Kettering and cross the D’Entrecasteaux Channel by ferry to Bruny Island. From Adventure Bay, embark on a wilderness cruise beneath immense sea cliffs and through caves and narrow rock formations, watching for seals, dolphins, seabirds and migrating whales. After lunch, search for the island’s elusive white wallabies before climbing to the Neck Lookout for magnificent views across North and South Bruny. The return journey showcases another side of the island through tastings of local honey, cheese, beverages and oysters.

Day

3

Discovering Hobart's culture and history

Begin with a guided introduction to Hobart before ascending kunanyi / Mount Wellington for sweeping views across the city and surrounding landscapes. Back at the waterfront, browse Salamanca Market and its extensive collection of Tasmanian produce, crafts and artisan goods. Continue to historic Richmond, known for its colonial buildings and convict heritage, followed by a tasting at Wicked Cheese. The afternoon takes a strikingly contemporary turn at MONA and Moorilla, before returning to Hobart aboard the MONA ROMA ferry.

Day

4

Journey to the Tasman Peninsula

Journey east through rural Tasmania towards the Tasman Peninsula, pausing at Pirate’s Bay Lookout before sampling handmade treats at the Tasmanian Chocolate Foundry and visiting the fragrant fields of Port Arthur Lavender. The centrepiece of the day is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Port Arthur Historic Site, where several hours and a harbour cruise reveal the history of this former penal settlement. Afterwards, you may continue to Maingon Bay and descend to Remarkable Cave, framed by ancient sandstone cliffs and the powerful Southern Ocean.

Day

5

Discovering Freycinet National Park

Travel north along Tasmania’s East Coast, stopping at Kate’s Berry Farm before enjoying lunch and a wine tasting at Devil’s Corner Vineyard, accompanied by views towards the Hazards and Great Oyster Bay. Continue into Freycinet National Park, where you can choose between the climb to the celebrated Wineglass Bay Lookout or a gentler excursion to Cape Tourville Lighthouse, with further opportunities to explore Honeymoon Bay. After an afternoon amid Freycinet’s granite peaks and turquoise coastline, continue to Bicheno for the night.

Day

6

Journey to St Helens

Begin at East Coast Natureworld, a wildlife sanctuary where Tasmanian devils, wombats, wallabies, kangaroos and spotted quolls provide a close encounter with the island’s native fauna. Return to Bicheno to see its coastal blowhole before lunch at the waterfront Lobster Shack. Continue north through the landscapes of Tasmania’s East Coast to Ironhouse, where a guided experience introduces its locally produced craft beers, whisky, spirits and wines. The day concludes in the fishing town of St Helens.

Day

7

Journey to Launceston

Travel north to the Bay of Fires, where brilliant white sand, clear water and orange-lichen-covered rocks create one of Tasmania’s most distinctive coastal landscapes. Turn inland to Pyengana for a local cheese tasting before walking through fern-filled forest to the base of St Columba Falls, one of Tasmania’s tallest waterfalls. After a characterful country-pub lunch, continue to Bridestowe Lavender Estate before making your way towards Launceston and the Tamar Valley for your final overnight stay.

Day

8

Final Departure

Slow the pace for a final day celebrating northern Tasmania. Begin at Cataract Gorge, where you can wander among the gardens and native wildlife or cross the gorge aboard its famous chairlift. Continue through the Tamar Valley to Beauty Point for a visit to either Seahorse World or Platypus House, followed by a journey through historic Beaconsfield. The afternoon is devoted to the Tamar Valley’s acclaimed cool-climate wines, with lunch and a tasting before returning to Launceston, where your Tasmanian journey draws to a relaxed close.
