Journey to Thimphu

Begin before dawn with the possibility of witnessing the ceremonial unfurling of the Paro Festival’s sacred thongdrel between approximately 3:00am and 6:00am, should the ceremony take place this year. This enormous religious thangka is displayed only on rare occasions and is traditionally believed to bring great spiritual merit to those who see it. Unfurled in the darkness before dawn and carefully rolled away as the first rays of sunlight appear, the ceremony may be accompanied by traditional prayers and sacred dances, offering a remarkable glimpse into Bhutan’s living Buddhist traditions. Please note that the unfurling cannot be guaranteed in advance. After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to Thimphu, stopping along the way at Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest surviving dzong and a site steeped in history and legend. Upon arrival in the capital, settle into your accommodation before exploring the School of Traditional Arts and Crafts, where you can observe skilled artisans preserving Bhutan’s centuries-old artistic techniques. Continue to the National Institute of Traditional Medicine to discover the country’s distinctive approach to traditional healing and the preservation of indigenous remedies, before concluding your day at the Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu’s most revered Buddhist landmarks, distinguished by its elegant whitewashed structure, golden spire and deeply spiritual atmosphere.
