Nomads and Taiga Escape

Day

1

1: Ulaanbaatar City Tour

Upon arrival at the Chinggis Khaan International Airport, the Unlock Nomads Tour team will greet you and transfer you to the hotel. We will then take a city tour, including the National History Museum and Sukhbaatar Square. In the late afternoon, we will visit a local family in Ulaanbaatar to see felt art. This experience will enable us to craft our souvenirs out of sheep wool. Overnight at the hotel.

Amarbayasgalant 365 km, 6 hours

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we will start our adventure by driving to Amarbayasgalant Monastery. Lunch boxes. Amarbayasgalant Monastery is one of Mongolia’s largest and most architecturally significant Buddhist sites. Afternoon guided tour of the monastery and interact with local monks to gain in- depth knowledge and insights into the monastery’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Overnight in ger camp.

Bulgan Province 235 km, 4 hours

This morning, we will start driving to Uran Togoo volcano in Bulgan province, an extinct volcano known for its stunning crater and beautiful scenery. The province is also known for its horsemanship and best airag (fermented mare’s milk) among Mongolians. Afternoon visit a local nomadic family and hear their stories about their spiritual connection with Mongolian horses. Overnight in the ger camp.

4: Lake Khuvsgul 220 km, 3 hours

After breakfast, we will drive to Lake Khuvsgul via Murun City. The lake, often called the “Blue Pearl of Mongolia,” is the country’s largest freshwater lake by volume and one of the oldest lakes in the world. Afternoon local exploration, including hiking and photographing. (Optional boating can be organised at the request) Overnight in ger camp.

Full day at the Lake

Spend the day exploring the stunning lake of Khuvsgul. In the morning, visit the Tsaatan or reindeer people, a nomadic community living in the Taiga region near Lake Khuvsgul. They herd reindeer and have a unique culture shaped by their relationship with these animals. In the afternoon, we will enjoy photographing the scenery and wildlife. Evening stargazing (optional). Overnight in ger camp.

Full day at the Lake

Spend the whole day at the Lake. Relax and unwind in nature. Khuvsgul Lake is a perfect place to slow down and reconnect with nature. Optional kayaking can be arranged at the request. Overnight in Ger camp.

Jargalant 160 km, 4 hours

Drive to Jargalant, a popular hot spring retreat known for its relaxing natural mineral baths and beautiful mountain scenery. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon while enjoying a peaceful environment for healing. This afternoon, we will explore Jargal Sum (a small village) and visit a local family that crafts wooden parts of ger. The town itself is known for its art of making traditional Mongolian dwellings. Overnight in a ger camp.

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake 150 km, 2 hours

Drive to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, an alpine lake stretching over 16 kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide. The afternoon hike to the volcano and enjoy beautiful views of Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and the surrounding area from the top. Remember to bring your camera as it is the best place for birding! Overnight in ger camp.

Arkhangai Province 150 km, 2 hours

Today, we continue driving to the nomadic settlement via Taikhar Rock in Arkhangai province. Upon arrival, hosts will greet us and have lunch in their ger. We will experience making traditional homemade cheese from yak milk in the afternoon. Cutting firewood by saw and chopping it into little pieces is one of the essential daily tasks

Nomad settlement

Full day in the nomadic settlement. Morning activities: milking yaks, making dairy products such as yak butter, yoghurt, and traditional Mongolian vodka, gathering yaks, herding sheep and goats. At noon, we will make Khuushuur (fried dumplings) for lunch with the help of hosts—afternoon activities: horseback riding and trekking across the grasslands. A nomadic-style barbecue, cooked over an open fire, will be served for dinner and overnight at the settlement.

Kharkhorin 235 km, 4 hours

Today, we will say goodbye to our hosts and drive to Kharkhorin via Taikhar Rock. A short stop at Taikhar Rock for photography (optional). Kharkhorin was the capital of the Mongol Empire between 1235 and 1260. Guided tour to Erdenezuu Monastery and Kharkhorin Museum. Overnight in ger camp.

Ulaanbaatar km, 380 km 4 hours

After breakfast, we will drive to Kharkhorin, the capital city of the Mongol Empire between 1235 and 1260. At the heart of Kharkhorin lies the Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of Mongolia’s most significant spiritual and cultural sites. Built in 1585, Erdene Zuu is Mongolia’s oldest surviving Buddhist monastery, surrounded by an imposing wall of 108 white stupas. We will visit the Erdenezuu Monastery and Kharkhorin Museum. Overnight in Ger Camp.

Transfer to the Chinggis Khaan International Airport. The services conclude.
