Iceland Must See Summer Tour

Day

1

Arrival in Reykjavík

A private driver will wait for you by the arrival gates at KEF Airport upon arrival and take you to your Reykjavík accommodation. Spend the day getting to know our favourite little city. Albeit small, there are countless interesting things to see and do, as well as some incredible restaurants to try. Have a read through our Reykjavík City Guide, where we’ve outlined some of our favourite places, covering everything from transportation in the city, to sights, activities and restaurants.

Day

2

The Highlights of South Coast

Our guide will pick you up from your Reykjavík accommodation to embark on our adventure to explore the entire south coast of Iceland. We’ll visit Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls before taking a walk on Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. We continue our drive further east, where we’ll soon start to see the spectacular
glaciers and Iceland’s highest mountains until we come into our accommodation for the night.

Day

3

Discover Vatnajökull National Park

After a good night’s rest, we set off on another wonderful day. We’ll make our way to do the glacier hike on Falljökull glacier. We are heading onto the glacier to hike all the way up to the astonishing icefall of the glacier, exploring the glacier’s textures, features and walking on the bottom of its crevasses. It’s truly a unique experience. For more information, read our Glacier Hike Guide. Once we come off the ice, we head to one of our favourite sights in Iceland. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon will be sure to leave you in awe, with its icebergs floating around this enormous lagoon, and washing up on the black sand shores of Diamond Beach. Here we join a Zodiac boat tour to better explore this massive lagoon and see the calving face of the glacier. It is often possible to spot seals swimming between and resting on the icebergs.

Day

4

Explore the South Coast

After a couple of days filled with big adventures, it’s time to slow the pace down and have a more relaxed day. We take our time as we travel back west along the south coast, stopping at more of our favourite south coast spots. We’ll start with an easy hike along the feather-like ridges of the canyon with the impossible-to-pronounce name, Fjaðrárgljúfur. By the time we reach Vík, it’s time for lunch in this picturesque town. Afterwards, we’ll make our way to tonight’s accommodation.

Day

5

Adventure through Volcanic Westman Islands

Today, we leave mainland Iceland via the Herjólfur ferry, which takes us to the volcanic chain of islands known as Westman Islands for the day. As we come to land, we go right from one vessel to the next, and go for an exhilarating RIB Boat tour that takes us around the islands and into its sea caves. If we are lucky, we may catch a glimpse of the wildlife surrounding the island and see whales and puffins right here in their natural habitat. We go for lunch in one of the local restaurants, then hike up the still-warm Eldfell volcano that infamously erupted in 1973, destroying hundreds of homes on the island, giving it its name of ‘Pompeii of the north’. We then drive to the southern point of the main island where we come to sea cliffs where the puffins reside in summer, but here you’ll find one of the largest colonies in Iceland.

Day

6

Venture to Þórsmörk Highlands

Today, we truly go off the beaten track, going into Þórsmörk in the highlands, in one of our partners’ customised super jeeps that enable us to cross deep glacial rivers and handle nearly any terrain. On the way, we’ll head all the way up to a viewpoint over Gígjökull, one of the outlet glaciers of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Here, you will get an idea of the forces that were at play during the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Next stop, we will explore Stakkholtsgjá canyon, a beautiful natural wonder. After our walk in the canyon, we’ll make our way deep into Þórsmörk, a nature reserve in the southern Icelandic Highlands, nestled between the Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull glaciers. You have the opportunity to enjoy the astonishing landscape and take nice short hikes around the area, and really take in the beautiful, unspoiled nature of Iceland.

Day

7

Visit Friðheimar Tomato Greenhouse

Once we’ve checked out of our accommodation this morning, we make our way to see the famous sights within the Golden Circle. The mighty Gullfoss waterfall, the erupting geysers and the geothermal area of Geysir. Afterwards, we make our way to the nearby Friðheimar Tomato Greenhouse, where we’ll have a delicious lunch right among all the plants in the tomato greenhouse. It’s a truly unique experience! We end the day at one of the most historic and stunning sights in Iceland. Þingvellir National Park, where the tectonic plates are pulling apart, is also the site of the first parliament here in Icelan,d just after settlement. From here it’s only a short drive to Reykjavík, just in time for dinner in the city.

Day

8

The Iconic Lava Tunnel and Blue Lagoon

By late morning, you will be picked up to explore the UNESCO Global Geopark of Reykjanes Peninsula. We start the day at The Lava Tunnel, one of the longest lava caves in Iceland, where you explore the inner workings of a volcanic eruption, following the path that the lava flowed during the Leitahraun eruption 5,200 years ago. We’ll take the scenic route back along Lake Kleifarvatn to Krýsuvík for a walk around the Mars-like geothermal hot springs. Together with your guide, you’ll stop by other sights as time allows.

You’ll end the day by staying at Silica Hotel. This is where you say goodbye to your Hidden Iceland guide, as you will spend the night here and enjoy the Blue Lagoon before heading to the airport the next day. By staying here, you get premium access to the main Blue Lagoon, but the hotel also has a more secluded Silica Lagoon that is only available to the hotel guests.
