Visit the huge Meijijingu Shrine, constructed in 1920 by more than 100,000 volunteers to honour Emperor Meiji, the first emperor of modern Japan, at the outset of the Meiji period. Move onto the busy streets of Omotesando and Aoyama, lined with fashionable shops and architectural wonders – it is a great area to stroll around! At 8:00 AM, you will check out of your hotel, meet your English-speaking assistant, and transfer by private chartered car to Tokyo Station. First, you go to the Arashiyama district, and first you will visit Tenryu-ji Temple. This famous Zen Buddhist temple is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji branch of the Rinzai Zen sect and part of the World Cultural Heritage monuments. It has an excellent garden with a pond stroll that was laid out by a garden designer of genius. Then, you will transfer to the Golden Pavilion Kinkakuji temple, originally built in 1397 to serve as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, whose grandson used the temple as the inspiration for the Silver Pavilion Ginkakuji temple. Then, you will visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, where you can also see the city of Kyoto. With its magnificent views of the city from its main hall attracting visitors throughout Japan, Kiyomizudera Temple was originally founded in 798. The common Japanese idiom “jumping from the veranda of Kiyomizu Temple” means that they are about to undertake some particularly bold or daring adventure. Continue your stroll to reach the Geisha district of Gion, famed for the preservation of its traditional architecture and traditional entertainment presented by graceful “Geiko,” which literally means “women of art.” During its golden age in the first half of the 19th century, more than 3000 Geikos worked in some 700 teahouses in Gion.

Spend a day at your own pace

At 11:30 AM, you will check out of your hotel and meet your English-speaking assistant in the lobby before transferring by private vehicle to Kyoto Station. From here, you will board Bullet Train Hikari #650 (12:33–14:38), travelling comfortably from Kyoto to Odawara Station, the principal gateway to the Hakone region.

Spread out on the majestic Sengokuhara plain against the background of the broad mountains of the outer rim of Hakone Crater, the Daihakone Country Club offers 18 handmade holes landscaped with truly unique individuality. A notable feature of the course is the hall No.17 known as the “Lotus flower” a very difficult hole surrounded by tricky bunkers.

You will visit Yosegizaiku Studio, which is a type of traditional Japanese parquetry. With over 200 years of history, Hakone parquetry is a style of wooden mosaic work made with various types and colours of wood shaped into geometrical patterns. Unique to Hakone, these elaborate handicrafts are a favourite with tourists from abroad, who take them home as Japanese souvenirs and gifts. Hakone is a volcanic national park near Mt. Fuji, the tallest and most famous mountain in Japan, attracting more than 200,000 climbers every year. Take a lake cruise while enjoying the magnificent views of Mt.Fuji in the background. Look for reflections of the surrounding mountains in the lake’s surface. Lake Ashi was formed in the caldera of Mt. Hakone. Visit the unique Hakone Open Air Museum, where you can enjoy the balance of nature and art through a variety of sculptures in perfect harmony with picturesque views of the surrounding valley and mountains. Also take a look at the indoor galleries, including works from world-famous artists, including Rodin, Bourdelle, Miro, and one of the largest collections of British sculptor Henry Moore. There is also a Picasso Pavilion with a collection of over 300 pieces. You will transfer and check into the hotel by 18:00.
