An Argentine Wildlife Adventure

Day

1

Arrival in Buenos Aires

Arrive in Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan city where elegant architecture, vibrant neighbourhoods and a strong European influence blend with unmistakable Latin American character. Settle into the capital and enjoy time to discover its cafés, restaurants and atmospheric streets at your own pace. This sophisticated introduction provides a striking contrast to the remote wildlife destinations that lie ahead, from Patagonia’s Atlantic coastline to the wetlands of northeastern Argentina.

Day

2

Cycling Through Buenos Aires

Join a local guide for a cycling journey through some of Buenos Aires’ most fascinating neighbourhoods, combining architectural landmarks with stories from the city’s past. Travelling by bicycle offers a more intimate perspective on the capital, moving easily between grand avenues and characterful local districts. Those wishing to explore farther afield can alternatively add an optional ferry journey across the Río de la Plata to historic Colonia del Sacramento in neighbouring Uruguay.

Day

3

Discovering The Tigre Delta

Leave the energy of central Buenos Aires behind and journey towards Tigre, passing the attractive residential districts of Vicente López, Olivos and San Isidro. On arrival, take to the water for a relaxing cruise through the Paraná Delta, navigating sheltered channels lined with waterfront homes and lush vegetation. The waterways reveal a very different side of life around the Argentine capital, where boats replace roads and peaceful riverside communities provide an appealing escape from the city.

Day

4

Journey to Peninsula Valdés

Travel south from Buenos Aires towards the vast landscapes of Patagonia and the wildlife-rich Peninsula Valdés. This UNESCO-listed region is one of Argentina’s outstanding natural environments, where the arid Patagonian steppe meets the South Atlantic. Settle into your estancia and begin discovering a coastline renowned for extraordinary concentrations of marine life, including southern right whales, orcas, dolphins, penguins, sea lions and elephant seals depending on the season.

Day

5

Discovering the Wildlife of Peninsula Valdés

Spend another day exploring the extraordinary ecosystems of Peninsula Valdés alongside resident biologists and naturalists. Head out in search of the region’s marine wildlife, with possible sightings ranging from whales and dolphins to penguins and orcas. After returning to the estancia for lunch, the afternoon can be used to visit nearby elephant-seal or sea-lion rookeries, where the rugged shoreline provides a remarkable setting for observing the behaviour of these powerful marine mammals.

Day

6

Day at Leisure

Enjoy a flexible day surrounded by the vast landscapes and wildlife of Peninsula Valdés. Return to the coastline for further nature encounters, choose from the activities offered by your estancia or simply slow the pace and appreciate the tranquillity of this remote Patagonian setting. With wildlife movements changing throughout the seasons, another excursion may reveal completely different encounters from those of the previous day.

Day

7

Journey to Córdoba

Continue to Córdoba, Argentina’s second-largest city and the gateway to the beautiful Sierras de Córdoba. Once an important point along the historic Camino Real linking Alto Perú with the Río de la Plata, the city retains a rich architectural and cultural heritage. Beyond the urban centre, rolling countryside and mountain landscapes introduce another side of Argentina, setting the stage for the estancia experiences and gaucho traditions of the coming days.

Day

8

Savouring the Gaucho Life

Experience the traditions of rural Argentina during a day devoted to the gauchos and their remarkable horsemanship. Ride through the countryside before visiting an estancia, where your hosts introduce the history of the property and the enduring culture of cattle ranching. Spend time at the cattle station learning about daily life on the land and join the gauchos during their work, before enjoying one of Argentina’s great culinary traditions: a generous barbecue prepared in true estancia style.

Day

9

A Day at Leisure

Spend the day according to your own interests, taking advantage of the peaceful surroundings of your lodge and the landscapes of the Córdoba countryside. You may choose from locally available activities, continue exploring the region or simply enjoy a slower day after your horseback adventure. The open valleys and hills of the Sierras provide an inviting setting in which to relax before travelling north towards one of South America’s great wetland ecosystems.

Day

10

Journey to Iberá Wetlands

Fly to Posadas and continue overland into Corrientes, home to the immense Iberá Wetlands and Argentina’s largest conservation area. Settle into your lodge and begin discovering a landscape of lagoons, marshes, grasslands and forest. This vast freshwater ecosystem supports an exceptional concentration of wildlife and offers a dramatic contrast to Patagonia’s windswept coast and Córdoba’s mountain countryside. Your lodge becomes the base for exploring this extraordinary wilderness over the coming days.

Day

11

Exploring the Iberá Wetlands

Enjoy a flexible day in the heart of the Iberá Wetlands, choosing from the nature experiences available through your lodge. Explore the surrounding lakes, marshes and grasslands in search of the region’s remarkable wildlife, or spend time simply enjoying the tranquillity of the reserve. The wetlands shelter an impressive diversity of animals and birdlife, making every excursion an opportunity for unexpected encounters in one of Argentina’s richest natural habitats.

Day

12

Final Adventures

Spend another day immersed in the wilderness of Iberá, allowing time for further wildlife encounters before leaving this remarkable ecosystem. Depending on the activities available locally, venture through wetlands and grasslands with expert guides or explore by water for a different perspective on the reserve. Keep watch for capybaras, caimans, marsh deer and prolific birdlife while enjoying the serenity of a landscape transformed by one of South America’s most ambitious conservation stories.

Day

13

Final Departures

Leave the wetlands and return towards Buenos Aires for your onward journey. Your adventure concludes after exploring an exceptional cross-section of Argentina’s natural environments — from the marine-mammal-rich coastline of Peninsula Valdés and the ranching country around Córdoba to the lagoons and grasslands of Iberá. Along the way, encounters with gaucho culture, Patagonian wildlife and some of South America’s most prolific birdlife reveal a lesser-seen side of Argentina defined by conservation, wilderness and extraordinary biodiversity.
