A Taste of Morocco: Casablanca to Marrakesh

Day

1

Casablanca to Chefchaouen via Rabat

Welcome to Morocco! Begin in Casablanca and visit the Hassan II Mosque, which sits on an outcrop overlooking the Atlantic. It features the tallest minaret in the world and is one of the few mosques open to non-Muslims.

Head north toward Chefchaouen, stopping in Rabat to explore the Chellah Necropolis, Bab Oudaia gate, Kasbah des Oudaias, Hassan Tower, and the Mausoleum of Mohamed V.

Continue to Chefchaouen. Wander the steep, cobbled streets lined with blue-washed buildings. Relax in Plaza Uta el-Hammam, explore the kasbah, and walk up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset views.

2

Volubilis, Meknes and Arrival in Fes

Travel south toward Fes, stopping at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a well-preserved UNESCO site.

Continue to Meknes and explore the imperial city and medina. Visit Bab al-Mansour gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Arrive in Fes and visit the Merenid Tombs for panoramic views of the city before settling into your riad.

Exploring the Medina of Fes

Fes is the oldest imperial city and home to one of the most complete medieval medinas in the Arab world.

Explore Fes el Bali and Fes el Jdid with a guide. Enter through Bab Boujeloud and walk along Talâa Kebira past souks and shops.

Visit the Chouara Tannery and view traditional dyeing methods. Continue to Al Attarine Madrasa and Al-Qarawiyyin University. Optionally join a cooking class before ending the day.

Middle Atlas to Sahara (Erg Chebbi)

Travel south through the Middle Atlas mountains via the Col du Zad pass and cedar forests. Spot Barbary macaques and stop in Midelt for lunch.

Continue through the Ziz Valley with its oases and ksars before arriving in Erfoud.

Reach Merzouga and ride a camel across the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Watch the sunset and spend the night at a desert camp.

5

Desert Towns, Todra Gorge and Ouarzazate

Watch the sunrise and depart the desert. Visit Khemliya village and continue to Rissani to explore its market and livestock auction.

Travel to Tinghir and explore the Todra Gorge, walking along the river beneath towering cliffs.

Continue through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and Kelâat M’Gouna before arriving in Ouarzazate, known for its film studios.

Aït Benhaddou and Atlas Mountains to Marrakech

Visit Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the narrow streets and climb to the granary for views.

Cross the High Atlas mountains via Tizi n’Tichka Pass, spotting Mount Toubkal.

Arrive in Marrakech and explore Jemaa el-Fna in the evening, filled with performers, food stalls, and entertainment.

Exploring Marrakech and Departure

Explore Marrakech’s medina, starting with the Koutoubia Mosque and its gardens.

Wander the souks including Souk el Attarin, Souk Chouari, and Souk Smata. Visit the Souk des Teinturiers to observe traditional dyeing.

Visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa and admire its carved cedar ceilings, plasterwork, and tilework before departing in the evening.
