A Horseback Safari to the Maasai Mara

We arrive in Nairobi and are transferred to a local flight to our destination – a beautiful scenic flight passing over the Kikuyu Highlands before reaching the Great Rift Valley.

Our camp for the next two nights is in a grove of acacia trees on a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains at Olare Lamun. Our days will be filled with exploring the remote area with its abundant game and wildlife.

We will be able to explore the area by drives, horseback rides and walks from camp. Night rides will allow us the opportunity to see some exciting nocturnal game activity.

This morning sees us head out for an early start. It is our first day on the move, and the longest ride of our trip. We ride across vast rolling plains and watch the game become more plentiful as we approach the Mara ecosystem.

We expect to see herds of giraffe, wildebeest, gazelle and the occasional elephant and buffalo. Our next camp is situated on the edge of the Ma’asai Mara National Park.

Our days here are filled with morning and evening game rides that allow us to get much closer to the wild animals and bring some superb photographic opportunities.

This morning we head west across the Mara Plains until we reach the Mara River. We make the river crossing on horseback at one of the famous wildebeest crossings, and then head southwest across the Mara Triangle where we picnic for lunch before arriving at our new camp

We descend from the river banks after a delicious breakfast and ride back across the same wildebeest crossing on the river. We head northwards to our new camp on the banks of the Mara River. Our unique location here allows us to be close to the hippo pools, so that we can be lulled to sleep by their night-time murmurs.

Leaving the camp after breakfast, we then drive to Deloraine, our home for the last two nights, passing through the impressive tea-growing area of Kericho on our way.

We arrive at Deloraine in time for afternoon tea, and our last full day can be spent as we please: possibly a trip to Lake Nakuru or Bogoria, both famous for their pink flamingos. We depart after lunch on a road transfer back to Nairobi, from where we board our international flight home.
