With travel costs continuing to climb, finding an affordable European getaway has become a priority for many travellers. Airfares have risen amid ongoing global uncertainty, while inflation has made spontaneous trips less realistic than they once were. As a result, more people are carefully researching destinations that offer the best value for money.

Fortunately, Europe is home to a number of destinations that combine rich culture, fascinating history and attractive prices. The latest Post Office City Costs Barometer identified the best-value city break destinations by comparing the cost of 12 common tourist purchases for two people across 50 European cities.

Sarajevo

As the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it has been named the most affordable city break destination in Europe. Set in a valley along the Miljacka River and surrounded by the wooded peaks of the Dinaric Alps, Sarajevo is renowned for its cultural heritage, diverse cuisine and excellent value for visitors.

One of Sarajevo’s most distinctive features is its blend of architectural styles. Influences from both the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman periods can be seen throughout the city, where elegant pastel-coloured buildings stand alongside traditional red-roofed structures, creating a unique urban landscape.

The city also holds a significant place in European history. It was here that Bosnian Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914, an event widely regarded as the catalyst for the First World War.

According to the Post Office report, Sarajevo’s combination of affordable accommodation, low-cost public transport and reasonably priced attractions helped it secure the top position in this year’s rankings. Dining out also remains relatively inexpensive, making it possible for visitors to enjoy the city’s food scene without stretching their budget.

Among the city’s popular attractions is the cable car that carries visitors to Mount Trebević, where hiking trails and remnants of the former Olympic bobsleigh track offer panoramic views and a glimpse into Sarajevo’s sporting history.

Although Sarajevo was not ranked as the cheapest destination for restaurant dining alone, with a meal for two including wine costing £63.14, its overall affordability remains impressive. The combined cost of all surveyed items totalled just £248.27, making it the best-value city break destination in Europe.

Eastern European cities performed particularly strongly in the rankings. Sarajevo was followed by Bucharest in Romania, Tirana in Albania and Belgrade in Serbia, all of which offer attractive experiences at relatively low prices.

At the opposite end of the scale, the Scandinavian capitals of Oslo and Copenhagen were identified as Europe’s most expensive city break destinations, with the total cost of the surveyed items reaching £734 and £671 respectively.

Summer in Oslo, although mesmerising, is also on the costlier side.

The cost-efficient way

For travellers looking to explore Europe without compromising on culture, character or experience, cities such as Sarajevo show that a memorable escape does not need to come with a premium price tag. With its layered history, distinctive architecture, mountain setting and excellent-value dining, Sarajevo offers a compelling alternative to Europe’s more expensive capitals.
